Last night I opened an old vines grenache from Spain to go with our pizza for dinner. I noticed that the bottle, standard BDX, was not round. It was flattened on two sides and it was oblong/elliptical...not visibly, but I could feel it. I know this has no bearing on the wine inside and it is purely cosmetic. My question is this...do bottle seconds go to lesser wineries for QPR wines from the manufacturer vs. getting recycled for a first quality bottle?

Bob - not that I am aware. However, when buying glass there are a bunch of different vendors offering different shapes at different quality points. My guess is they chose that shape. There's an old school CdP producer (whose name is escaping me) that has an almost triangle shaped bottle.

I used to not really care, more it's the quality of the wine in the bottle kind of thinking, but I wish everyone would go to more standard bdx/burgundy bottles. They fit in the cellar racks, they weigh less than some of these monsters, etc.

I can't imagine this was chosen for its shape. Bottle wasn't visibily out of round, but you could definitely feel it with you hands.

As for the CdP that is crazy:

That's the one! What was the name of the producer? It is possible they bought some extremely cheap glass...bad dies produce odd shape

Franken Rieslings are quite pricy and very well reviewed. Yet, they use THIS baby (the bocksbeutel).
