TN: 2006 Louis Martini Sonoma County Cabernet
Is it a blockbuster? Is it an oozemonster? Does it reek of oak and blueberries? Will it show well in a blind tasting alongside the likes of Harlan and Screagle?
No, no, no and no.
Is it varietally correct? Does it have a lovely nose of cherries, blackberries and cassis with a little herbal component? Is it elegant and perfectly balanced with fine-grained tannins? Does it scream, "Pour another glass?" Was it the perfect accompaniment to my porterhouse? To all of those the answer is a resounding "YES".
Full retail is somewhere around $16. It's on "post-off" in Portland right now, so I paid $11 for it. Stunning bargain, easily worth twice that and more.

Just a smidgeon of herbal, Mikey. Just a touch. It's probably from the little dollop of cabernet franc.
What's really nice to see is that the sale of Martini to Gallo has had only positive effects. Mike and Carolyn still run the place (in a fairly autonomous fashion, apparently) and the wines, if anything, have only gotten better. It's a far cry from the situation at Mondavi where the family is out and the winery website hasn't even been updated to make note of an icon's death.

We only have one liquor store bolt on and it is in Fort Worth. I need to go get weekly supplies for dinner and such, so I will give the normal selection a look see.

This is a commonly poured wine-by-the-glass at Kendall's at the Music Center. It's not bad, actually.
$12? Dayum, they charge $8/glass for it!

We are not good friends right now Bill. We had another two bottles at Tom's after dinner. It was, frankly, a shitshow.

I just got an email touting this wine from WINEX that I forwarded to some of you - okay, part of it - and Parker liked it enough to give it 90 points.

Needs a touch of herbally goodness or its not Cab. Over ripeness and over oaked are no way to go through life young man.mike pobega wrote:Great note. I love the old reliables,

How 'bout perfectly ripened without being overblown and moderately oaked?

This is a nice Cab, especially for the price. It's a bit restrained at the moment but it's young. My wife prefers the Avalon Napa Cab but we both agree that in QPR Cab land the 2006 Susana Balbo Crios Cabernet is the hands down winner at the moment at $11.
