San Diego recs
I'll be in San Diego March 7-12 for a medical conference. I made reservations at the U.S. Grant hotel. Any thoughts on this hotel ? The conference is at the convention center, so I need to stay close to that area. Being a Starwood SPG member, this looked like the best Starwood property in the neighborhood. I'll probably have a few nice dinners out with the various reps. What restaurants are recommended in the convention center area ?
thanks

Jan - - Laurel about a mile up the hill on Fifth is reputedly still excellent. Fleming's and Rainwater's for steaks (not cheap). Sally's in the Manchester Hyatt has always been good. Trendy places in Little Italy, which is also less than a mile away. Most of the places in the Gaslamp cater to the tourist crowd - or at least did when I lived there. Croce's is fun after dinner.
If you go to Fleming's, the managing partner is Robert Andrews and I've known him since I was ten, though I haven't seen him in about 20 years. Contact him ahead of time, tell him "Woody" recommended that you visit his restaurant and tell him I said to say hello to my old friend "Pink". If he needs a clue about who I am - and he shouldn't - just mention The Optimists and my stepbrother "Sunk". He may take care of you - especially in the corkage department. There is no guarantee here but it's worth a shot. I ran into his older brother Bill ("BA") on the beach in La Jolla in November and he said Bobby likes to get visits from old high school pals and has a lot of latitude in his "entertainment budget", so being a high school pal once removed might get you somewhere.

Laurel is still excellent. There is a Palm steakhouse down by Petco Park in the Gaslamp that is good as well, also not cheap. I've heard good things about Crescent Heights and Royal India. Our tasting group is going to Royal India for a Riesling tasting in the near future, so if we go before you come out to SD I'll post and let you know what we think of it.
Don't really go downtown that often, so my firsthand knowledge down there isn't that great...

I was thinking about it, but probably will be without a car. Maybe I can work something out to get up your way for a night out.

Re: San Diego recs
Well, I could always come down there - likely only me, as it makes it much more of a production to bring the girls down also, with early bedtime and all. You are welcome here if you do find transportation, otherwise, I might be able to head on down - it's a nice driveJan.Brekke wrote:Todd F r e n c h wrote:And you are coming up to Dana Point when during that trip?Jan.Brekke wrote:I'll be in San Diego March 7-12 for a medical conference. The 5 course meal for $25 at Wine Vault and Bistro on India Street is the best QPR in town. Go to www.winevault bistro/calendar and click on a Sat date so see past tasting menus.

I'd definitely be up for that. I'm riding solo - Sandia and the kids are staying home.

Otto - thoughts? We could drink nice wine at Jan's hotel (unless he has a Doctor roomie)Jan.Brekke wrote:I'd definitely be up for that. I'm riding solo - Sandia and the kids are staying home.
Re: San Diego recs
Let's do it! I see that Jan is coming in on Saturday, March 7, so we can do it at the Vault on his first day in San Diego. Or else we can do it another day sameplace else. Bertrand at Mister A's has amazing views of the city and you can just about touch the planes landing at Lindbergh.

I arrive early afternoon on Saturday the 7th and would be free that night if it works for you guys. I should be able to pack a few bottles of wine for the trip. Otto, is the place you have in mind corkage friendly ?
