had some of the old school boys over tonight and it turned into a special night of nostalgia so we had to go in style...
1934 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti:
Pouring this into a glass is a treat and a half, its a deep Garnet-Amber-Brown. Overall, nose is earthy wet leather, some barnyard and dried fruit. Now I wasn't writing any notes while drinking this but can certainly recall walnuts with an earthy depth, rusty, no real fruit at this point, refined and smooth. Freak'n amazing.
1943 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti:
In the glass this was a near replica to the '34, deep Garnet-AMber-Brown but a bit less opaque. The nose here was starting to show signs of oxidation but nothing substantial, earthy wet leather, an odd citrus note and ginger. Again, I wasn't writing any notes while drinking this came across to me as an earthy caramel, black cherry and dried figs. Again, freak'n amazing.
This is not something you put a number on.

Wow, amazing night indeed!
How long did you have those open? Don't many super old wines get much of the fruit back after an hour or two of air? I recall the '66 Patriarche that was all barnyard and funk when opened, and the fruit just came out like crazy an hour later. Obviously these are much older, but I'd think the concept might still apply.

Thanks!
Decant was near a half an hour, mostly because we were bullshitting. Overall, last sip for me was about and hour and change after the bottle was opened. We went around and had two glasses a piece of each and the second round was definitely much more open (starting around the hour mark). The fruit was definitely not that strong, it was more secondary and/or developed characteristics that permeated these bottles.
From some past experience with bottles this age, they go down hill fast so we were trying to balance out giving enough time to breathe yet not fall apart while we were too busy insulting each other mothers.

Hey Glen, the short story, got damn lucky! My dad knows a family from old world money and the patriarch passed on. His wine cellar was ridonculous, yet alone their estate, and he was helping them organize a move. Since it was all going, I was able to get in and get a small claim of bottles. Among the most interesting was that 1906 Haut-Brion we spoke about last month, these two here and about a case and change of German/Alsatian Rieslings dating as far back as '38. I wasn't entirely confident that they would be alive and kicking but so far I've been proven wrong on almost everything that I've opened.

A little off-topic, but there's something about that year - "1943" - and the ambient events overshadowing the making of that wine, which would give me just a little pause.
