SoCal low Humidity and wine storage.
Do folks in southern California have trouble with low humidity in your passive or normal cellars???
Are the larger storage facilities all humidified?

Mine's the opposite problem, being by the beach. We have really high humidity, and there are some condensation issues with ours, particularly in the summer. We've got a LeCache 2400Peter Cargasacchi wrote:Do folks in southern California have trouble with low humidity in your passive or normal cellars???

Don't know about passive cellars or home units but the professional facilities keep the humidity in a certain range normally. I would wonder about home units though when we have extended Santa Ana conditions like over the past week and a half.

You guys worry too much.
As an experiment, I stored an entire case of wine in my garage for three years. Upright, through winter and summer. It was fine. A couple of weeks of low humidity won't matter at all. I'd be more worried about Todd's problem, especially as it relates to the labels and mold growing under the capsule.

Try storing wine here in Vegas where the humidity is usually about 5%.

Low humidity
Most of the units self regulate as relative humidity, which is what you are really seeking, is a function of temperature. So as most commercial units pull down to the right temp, they also pull out less moisture. This is one of the reasons our cooling units cool the space slower than a regular air conditioner which pulls out as much moisture as it can as quickly as it can to get down to temp.
Here in Albuquerque I see about 50-55F RH in my units. I do not add moisture of any sort.
Least humid cities, listing the lowest average relative humidity:
Las Vegas 31%
Phoenix 37%
Yuma, AZ 38%
Tucson 39%
El Paso 43%
Albuquerque 45%

I'm pretty sure my wine locker facility (The Wine Cellar) is humidified. I keep everything on its side anyways. At home, my Eurocave often leaves me with moldy labels, so definitely not a problem there.
