Matt Kramer's New California Wine
Reading it in bits n pieces. Pretty good up to now. Anyone else take a stab at it?
Surprised to read he praises Beringer's Bancroft Ranch Merlot over Pride as the best in California.

Its a great book, albeit a bit dated. (Unless theres a new one I hadn't heard of).

I'm not. Matt is an interesting duck, but if there's one thing that defines him, it's his distaste for heavily-extracted, heavily-oaked wines. He's sort of the anti-Parker in that regard.Jorge Henriquez wrote:Reading it in bits n pieces. Pretty good up to now. Anyone else take a stab at it?

FWIW, I've tasted Pride at the winery and at some offlines I've attended, and I've never had one that didn't end up in the dump bucket.

Has anyone tried the 92 and 93 Beringer Bancroft Merlot? Killer juice for about $30.

I got on the Beringer bandwagon for the '94 Bancroft Ranch, so that is the oldest I have had. Still have some '97 and '99 sleeping somewhere. Always thought they were some of the best merlots to come out of Cali.

I think Steve is referring to the release price.

Gotcha...
Havent' seen any recent Beringer HMBR Merlot locally. The 2004 PR Cab is $85 a bottle at Costco though.

Re: Matt Kramer's New California Wine
Beringer PR along with Opus One were my first "high end" forays into CA wine. Since learned my lesson regarding Opus, but still love the Beringer. Ed made some very strong wines between 1991 and 1997, and I bought them accordingly. After '98, I picked up a couple '01 and '02 bottles...nothing like the amount I got for '94 through '97 though. I might be tempted to get a lone '04 to see how it is doing.
